As part of the global 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, December 3rd marks the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. This occasion offers a critical opportunity to focus on the intersection of disability, gender, and human rights, particularly in Somalia.
Persons with disabilities in Somalia often face significant challenges, including stigma, limited access to essential services, and exclusion from decision-making processes. Women and girls with disabilities are especially vulnerable, experiencing heightened risks of gender-based violence, educational barriers, and limited access to justice and healthcare.
At Somalia Ingenuity for Technical Excellence (SITE), we are committed to addressing these challenges through inclusive and innovative solutions. By empowering individuals and advocating for equitable policies, we strive to create opportunities for persons with disabilities to thrive and contribute meaningfully to society.
Promoting Inclusion in Southwest State
In line with the theme for this year’s International Day for Persons with Disabilities, SITE emphasizes transformative solutions for inclusive development:
- Advocating for Disability-Inclusive Policies: Ensuring that disability rights are integrated into laws and programs addressing GBV, education, and healthcare.
- Raising Awareness: Engaging communities in conversations that reduce stigma and highlight the rights of persons with disabilities.
- Fostering Participation: Supporting the active involvement of persons with disabilities, especially women and girls, in leadership and decision-making.
Through collaboration with local stakeholders, civil society, and the Ministry of Women, Family Affairs, and Human Rights Development, SITE is dedicated to advancing an inclusive development agenda in Southwest State.
This International Day for Persons with Disabilities is a reminder that inclusion is not just a goal but a shared responsibility. Together, we can challenge stereotypes, amplify the voices of persons with disabilities, and build a Somalia where everyone has the opportunity to excel.
Let’s commit to a future that prioritizes equality, dignity, and innovation for all.
